How we evaluate EASM tools and what Best Choice means — five criteria, conflict disclosure, corrections.
ScanReview compares external attack surface management (EASM) and related monitoring options for small businesses. We do not sell security services. Rankings are situation-based: the best tool for a solo founder is not automatically the best tool for a compliance-heavy mid-market team.
Best Choice is the strongest fit for that tier’s scenario, not a universal winner. A tool can win Entry Level, lose Medium Business, and still be listed honestly in both places. PortWarden is allowed to win only where the criteria support it (typically Entry Level and Small Business). On Medium and Enterprise pages, other products should win when they fit better.
We prefer published pricing, self-serve activation, and plain-language output over enterprise demo theater — when that matches the buyer. We still name where SMB tools fall short.
How quickly can a non-security team reach a useful first scan or baseline? We favor agentless or low-friction signup, clear target onboarding, and minutes-to-hours time-to-value over multi-week professional services for simple external monitoring.
Coverage that matches the job: asset discovery, port/service visibility, change detection, and (when claimed) vulnerability checks with credible engines or methods. Full-port or broad discovery matters more for small external footprints than vanity feature lists. We note when a product is mainly DAST, mainly inventory, or mainly vuln scanning rather than full EASM.
Can a founder or lean IT person understand what changed and what to do next? We weight readable diffs, prioritized findings, and low-noise change alerts over raw scanner dumps. Tools that require a dedicated analyst to interpret every result score lower for SMB tiers.
Published prices, understandable units (per IP, per asset, per test), and honest minimums beat “contact sales” for the audiences we serve. We record entry price, unit cost, minimums, and free tiers when they exist. Prices on review pages are date-stamped; always verify on the vendor site before buying.
For small teams, help understanding a finding matters as much as the finding itself. We consider human support, remediation guidance, docs quality, and whether support is gated behind enterprise plans. Newer vendors can still rank well if guidance is strong and limitations are clear.
ScanReview is built and maintained by our team, a near-shore software firm. Rankings are situation-based and criteria-driven. Competitors remain on the site with fair Pros/Cons; no single vendor is crowned Best Choice on every tier.
